Summary (from denisegroverswank.com):
Everything Emma Thompson owns fits in a suitcase she moves from one roach infested motel to another. She and Jake, her five year old son who can see the future, are running from the men intent on taking him. Emma will do anything to protect him even when it means accepting the help of a stranger named Will. Jake insists she needs Will, but Emma’s never needed help before. And even though she’s learned to trust her son, it doesn’t mean she trusts Will.
Mercenary Will Davenport lives in the moment. Hauling Emma to South Dakota should have been an easy job, but his employer neglected to tell him about Emma’s freaky son and the gunmen hot on her trail. Instinct tells him this job is trouble, but nothing can prepare him for Jake’s proclamation that Will is The Chosen One, who must protect Emma from the men hunting her power. A power she doesn't know she has.
Will protects Emma and Jake on a cross-country chase from the men pursuing them, while struggling with memories from his past, his apprehension of Jake, and his growing attraction to Emma. Will’s overwhelming urge to protect Emma surprises him, especially since it has nothing to do with his paycheck and possibly everything to do with the tattoo Jake branded on his arm. Rich and powerful men are desperate to capture Emma, and Will must discover why before it's too late.
Review:
**NOTE: A copy of this book was provided by the author, Denise Grover Swank. However, no compensations were made and this review reflects my honest thoughts and feelings**
From the second I started reading, I was hooked. An incredibly high-paced, high-energy novel that has you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time. WOW, I was tired when I finished it.
One of the things that I found most enjoyable about the book was the characters. They are so realistic that you have no problems identifying with any of them. Emma seems like any other mother who is doing everything in her power to protect the son, Jake, she loves with every being of her nature. Jake, a child who has special 'abilities', is just a 5-year old boy that wants his mom to be happy and safe. His heart is heavy as he knows that the road ahead is full of up and downs. Will, a virtual stranger to the family, is out to complete a job but when he meets Emma and Jake, his feeling about his 'mission' become a little less clear.
The mystery that flows throughout is so powerful. I had no idea (zero, zilch, zip) about what was going to happen next. Just as my mind was setting in for a nice relaxing read, something crazy would happen and my adreniline would be racing. I could see this on the BIG screen one day... and I, for one, would be first in line to watch it.
Denise Grover Swank is a gem in her genre. A pure talent for writing to keep the readers interested and a brilliant job at setting up the next book in the series without leaving the reader unsatisfied.
Overall, this book was a fantastic read and I cannot WAIT for the second in the series!!
